Frequently asked questions

In general:

Why do I have to pay the students' union fee?
The Swedish parliament (Riksdagen) has determined that every student who studies at Swedish universities and university colleges is obliged to be a member of a students' union. The students' unions look into your social situation as a student and examine your courses together with the institutions. The student unions are in a constant dialog with the institutions, the faculty and the university to make the life of the students a little bit better.

In Lund almost every student also has to be a member of a student nation. The nations offer there members apartments and student rooms and a rich social life beside your studies.

How do I know what union to join?
If you are studying any of the programs or courses shown in the orange column to the right of this page you should be a member of the  Social Sciences union. If you are in an exhange programme like Erasmus, membership is not mandatory.

Why doesn’t my friend in Växjö have to become a member of a student nation?
You only have to be a member of a student union at Lund and Uppsala University. There are how ever student nations at several university colleges which you don’t have to join if you don’t want to.

I have received a student union fee but I’m not planning to study in the fall. Do I have to pay it anyway?
No, you are not supposed to pay your student union fee if you’re not going to study at Lund University. You can throw it away and nothing will happen.

I paid my student union fee last semester but I haven’t received any this semester. However my friend has received one.
The student union fee is sent out to everybody who paid their fee last semester before a certain date at the end of the semester. If you haven’t received one it can be because you have changed addresses and not reported this to you nation or student union. Another possibility is that something simply has gone wrong.

I have been accepted as a student on one of the courses at Lund University and I haven’t studied here before. How do I get a student union fee?
You choose a nation and bring your letter of acceptance to the nation of your choice and they will register you. They will give you a student union fee that covers both the nation and the student union.

I have change addresses. Whom am I supposed to report?
You report your new address to your nation or student union. When you do that the records of your nation, student union and the student paper Lundagård will be updated.
